FAQs

What do you need to know today?

The Kontraks, the Tally rating, privacy, your data and your account — all in one place.

Getting started

What is Kontrak Social?

Kontrak Social is a social contracting app. It helps you record and track the everyday agreements you make with friends and family – lending money or items, granting access to property, or promising a favour – so both people are clear on the terms and nobody has to rely on memory.

Is Kontrak Social free to use?

Yes. Kontrak Social is free to download and use. There may be optional in-app purchases for premium features or enhanced services over time.

How do I sign up?

Download the app from the App Store or Google Play and follow the prompts to create an account using your phone number. You’ll confirm a one-time password (OTP), take a profile selfie, and add a few basic details. It takes a couple of minutes.

How old do I have to be?

You must be at least 13 years old to use Kontrak Social. You confirm your age during sign-up, and it’s a requirement of our Terms and Conditions.

Which countries is Kontrak Social available in?

Kontrak Social is currently live in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, United States, United Kingdom, Indonesia, Philippines, South Africa and Sweden. If we’re not in your country yet, get in touch and we’ll let you know as soon as we launch near you – we prioritise the countries we hear from most.

Why does the app need my contacts and camera?

The camera is needed to take the selfies used to sign Kontraks, and contacts access lets you choose who you’re making a Kontrak with. We can’t see your contacts, and we don’t sell or share your data with third parties.

Making Kontraks

What are the four types of Kontrak?

General is for lending or borrowing just about anything – tools, books, a guitar, the doggo. Financial is for small loans, with repayment terms and instalments. Promise is a digital IOU or a favour to be claimed later, like mowing the lawn or shouting a coffee. Access is for property – camping, storage, agistment, or somewhere to stay – with terms set by the landholder.

How do I create a Kontrak?

Talk to the other person first and agree the basics. Then in the app, choose the Kontrak type, select your contact, enter the terms and choose whether the Kontrak is rated, then sign with a selfie and send. Once you both agree and sign, the Kontrak is set.

How do Access Kontraks work for property?

Access Kontraks are designed for granting someone access to land or property – camping, fishing, hunting, agistment, storage, or a place to stay. You set the address, the dates and times, and the conditions (gates closed, no fires outside the BBQ area, maximum number of guests, and so on). As the landholder you can amend or cancel if circumstances change, and you have a clear record of who was on your property and when.

How much can I lend through a Financial Kontrak?

Financial Kontraks cover amounts from $1 up to $10,000 in aggregate. Kontrak Social doesn’t handle the money itself – how you pay or lend is up to you, whether that’s cash or a bank transfer. We’re just here to help you keep track of the terms.

Can I change the terms after a Kontrak is set?

Yes. Either party can propose an amendment if circumstances change – extending a borrowing period, or adjusting a repayment schedule, for example. The other person needs to agree, so nothing changes unilaterally.

What happens when a Kontrak is finished?

When the terms are met and you’re both happy, tap “complete Kontrak”, sign with a selfie and send it through. Once your contact does the same, it’s complete and, if the Kontrak was rated, both ratings go up a level.

What if someone doesn’t meet the terms?

You can mark the Kontrak as failed, which takes the rating of the person who didn’t meet the terms down a level. Before you do, though, talk to them – often the terms just need amending. Kontrak Social is about building trust, so it’s worth trying to sort it out first.

I’ve created a Kontrak but it’s still pending?

When you create a Kontrak we don’t automatically message the other person – we found those messages were often mistaken for spam. Instead there’s an export button that sends the details through your own phone’s messaging app. Sending it from your trusted number stops scammers impersonating Kontrak Social. The message contains a link to the app store, letting them know a Kontrak is waiting on their number.

Trust and the Tally rating

What is the Tally rating?

Tally is our trust rating system, and Tallycat is the friend who keeps an eye on it. Your rating starts neutral. Complete a Kontrak within its terms and it goes up a level; fail to meet the terms and it goes down. It gives your social circle an at-a-glance sense of whether you follow through on what you say.

Can someone game their Tally rating?

We’ve made it difficult. You can only receive a positive bump from the same person once every three months, so nobody can rocket to the top by making repeat Kontraks with a mate. Negative bumps aren’t limited in the same way.

Can I create a Kontrak that doesn’t affect anyone’s rating?

Yes. The lender can set a Kontrak as unrated – handy for a parent lending to their kid, for example, where you still want the clarity but don’t want to affect their rating if things don’t go to plan.

What are trusted contacts?

Requests to borrow money are switched off by default. To let someone request money from you, add them as a trusted contact. It also cuts down scams: a request that arrives through the app from a trusted contact is genuine, and it’s backed by the selfie attached to the Kontrak.

Why sign with selfies?

Using a selfie as a signature shows the person you’re dealing with that you trust them, and it confirms who’s on the other end. You can’t upload a selfie – it has to be taken with your phone’s camera at the time, which helps ensure the person you’re making a Kontrak with is who you think it is.

Is a Kontrak legally binding?

No. Kontrak Social is a social platform, and Kontraks are not legally binding contracts. The app doesn’t replace a lawyer’s contract or a formal financial agreement – it’s a clear, mutual record of what two people agreed, designed to remove ambiguity between friends and family. We’re also not a lender, and nothing in the app constitutes legal, tax or financial advice. For anything significant, please speak to a lawyer, tax adviser or financial professional. See our Terms and Conditions for the full detail.

Do I have tax obligations on money I lend or borrow?

Possibly – that’s between you and your tax authority, and you are solely responsible for any tax obligations arising from your use of the platform. Our Terms note that the $10,000 aggregate limit sits within the De Minimis Exemption under U.S. tax code 7872(c)(2), but rules vary by country. If you’re unsure, talk to a tax adviser.

Privacy and your data

Can other people see my Kontraks?

No – privacy is central to how the app works. Only the person you have the Kontrak with can see it, its status and its details. Your trust rating is the exception: it’s visible to your contacts and updates live in the app.

Who can see my selfies?

Your selfies are stored on our secure servers and are not publicly available. We don’t collect or process biometric data and we don’t use facial-recognition templates. Another user can only see your profile selfie if they’re connected to you in the app, and selfies used to sign a Kontrak are visible to the person you made that Kontrak with. We don’t sell or share this data, and we’d only access it ourselves if someone were reported for illegal behaviour or harassment, or if we were legally compelled to.

Is my data secure?

We take security and privacy seriously and use robust measures to protect your information. We comply with Australian privacy law, and with the GDPR and UK GDPR where they apply to you. Our Privacy Policy sets out exactly what we collect, why, and who processes it on our behalf.

Does the website use cookies?

Only essential ones by default. We’ll ask before setting any analytics cookies, and you can decline – the site works exactly the same either way. Nothing is sent to our analytics provider unless you accept. Full detail is in our Privacy Policy.

What happens to my data if I delete my account?

Your account is frozen and archived, and your phone number can’t be used to create a new account or new Kontraks. If you later want it reactivated, email contact@kontrak.social – we’ll verify it’s really you by checking a phone bill and cross-referencing a new selfie against the one on file. For security we won’t be able to show you historical Kontraks. Note that anyone you made Kontraks with may still have their own record, so it’s always worth completing Kontraks in good faith.

Account and support

How do I delete my account?

You can delete your account from the account settings within the app. You can also request deletion using the form on our Contact page.

Can I use Kontrak Social on more than one device?

Yes, by signing in with the same account on each device. You’ll need the phone number linked to the account to hand, as we send a one-time password to verify each sign-in.

What does “Error 500” mean?

It just means the app can’t reach our server at that moment – usually a patchy connection or low signal. It generally sorts itself out quickly.

How do I report inappropriate behaviour?

Tap the “Report” button in the app and our team will review it. You can also block a user so they no longer appear in your feed, and unblock them later if things improve. Our terms prohibit content that is pornographic, racist, threatening, discriminatory, unlawful or violent. We are parents, and we operate a policy of mandatory reporting for anything that harms or depicts harm to a minor. We take this extremely seriously.

How do I contact support?

Use the Help or Support section in the app, email us at contact@kontrak.social, or fill in the form on our Contact page. We’re a small team and we’re happy to help.
